Cost guide
How much does skip hire cost in 2026?
A skip costs £140 to £550 for a 7 to 14 day hire, from a 2 yard mini to a 12 yard maxi, on rent-a-skip's 2026 UK ranges, and £60 to £440 on MyJobQuote's September 2026 guide. A road permit, an overweight load or a mixed-in item such as plasterboard adds to that.
How much does a skip cost by size?
A 2 yard mini skip costs £140 to £220 for a 7 to 14 day hire on rent-a-skip's 2026 figures, or £60 to £130 for a 2 to 3 yard skip on MyJobQuote's September 2026 guide. A 4 yard midi costs £180 to £280 (rent-a-skip) or £100 to £250 for 4 to 5 yards (MyJobQuote).
A 6 yard builders skip costs £230 to £340 on rent-a-skip's figures and £120 to £300 on MyJobQuote's. An 8 yard builders skip, the most common size, costs £280 to £420 (rent-a-skip) or £160 to £370 (MyJobQuote), with a national median of £331 in rent-a-skip's July 2026 price index.
A 12 yard maxi skip costs £370 to £550 on rent-a-skip's figures and £220 to £440 on MyJobQuote's. A 20 yard roll on roll off container costs £300 to £600 and a 40 yard £400 to £800 on MyJobQuote's guide, against £350 to £1,150 and £600 to £1,450 on rent-a-skip's April 2026 page, because RoRo containers are usually charged by the tonne as well as per container.
All of these figures exclude any council permit and assume mixed light waste.
Why is skip hire dearer in some towns than others?
The same 8 yard skip had a median price of £183 around Swansea and £517 around Truro in rent-a-skip's July 2026 index of more than 1,400 towns, a gap of 2.8 times. For 6 yard skips, rent-a-skip's regional medians ran from £190 in Liverpool to £446 in Cornwall (July 2026).
Most of the difference is disposal. Gate fees at the transfer station make up 35 to 55% of the price of a skip, according to rent-a-skip, and they vary by region. Landfill tax is the same everywhere in Great Britain: £130.75 a tonne at the standard rate and £8.65 a tonne at the lower rate for inert waste from 1 April 2026 (GOV.UK).
Central London costs more again: rent-a-skip's size guide says its national ranges exclude Central London, which adds 30 to 50%.
How much does a skip permit add to the price?
A permit is only needed when the skip goes on a road or pavement. Rent-a-skip found permit fees of £12.50 to £260 across 176 councils in June 2026, with a median of £64 and a London average of £101.
Our own check of council fee lists for 2026/27 found £12.90 for 7 days in Bolton (registered skip companies, non traffic-sensitive streets), £42 for 7 days in Birmingham, £71.50 for two weeks in Camden and £260 for 14 days in Redbridge. Many permits last 7 days while a hire lasts 7 to 14, so a second permit period can be added to the bill. Our skip permits page at /skip-permits/ lists every council.
What extra charges can be added to a skip?
Overweight loads cost £50 to £150 extra on rent-a-skip's July 2026 figures. Plasterboard mixed into general waste adds £80 to £150, and a mattress £15 to £30 (rent-a-skip FAQ, October 2026). Our skip research recorded £15 to £25 for a tyre and £50 to £90 for a fridge where firms accept them at all.
Keeping the skip longer costs money too. Rent-a-skip lists a 7 day extension at £30 to £50 for a 2 to 4 yard skip, £50 to £80 for 6 to 8 yards and £60 to £100 for 10 to 12 yards, and puts extensions in general at 50 to 75% of the original hire fee.
Refused items found at the transfer station can bring a retrospective charge of £100 to £300, according to rent-a-skip. Sofas and other upholstered seating may not go in a skip at all, since the POPs rules took effect on 1 January 2023.
Why do skip price guides disagree?
Skip price guides are published by operators, brokers and lead-generation sites, not by independent surveys. Rent-a-skip's 2026 ranges and MyJobQuote's September 2026 ranges overlap but differ by £80 to £90 at each end of the mini skip range, and Checkatrade's guide, as shown in a google.co.uk result in October 2026, put a mini skip at £75 to £175 and a midi at £130 to £320.
Guides also measure different things. Some quote a starting price for the lowest-cost area, some a median across towns, and some include heavier loads or permits. Roll on roll off prices disagree most, because the final bill depends on tonnage.
The practical answer is a written quote from two or three local firms with your postcode, the size, the waste type and where the skip will stand.
What should a skip hire quote include?
A skip hire quote should state the skip size, the hire period, delivery and collection, the weight allowance, VAT and whether a permit is included. Ask what each surcharge costs, including overweight loads, mattresses and plasterboard, and what an extension costs for both the hire and the permit.
Ask for the firm's waste carrier registration number and check it on the public register: the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA in Scotland or DAERA in Northern Ireland. In England a householder who hands waste to someone not authorised to take it, without making reasonable checks, can be given a fixed penalty of up to £600 in England (since 31 July 2023).
