What size skip do I need? Skip sizes explained

An 8 yard builders skip holds 60 to 80 bin bags and a 2 yard mini 20 to 30, on rent-a-skip's 2026 size guide, with weight limits of about 8 tonnes and 2 tonnes. Choose by weight as well as volume, because soil and rubble reach the limit long before a skip is full.

What sizes do skips come in?

Skips are measured in cubic yards. Mini skips are 2 to 3 yards, midi skips 4 to 5 yards, builders skips 6 to 8 yards and maxi skips 10 to 16 yards. Roll on roll off containers, carried by a hook-loader lorry, run from 20 to 40 yards.

The 6 and 8 yard builders skips are the sizes most firms keep in largest numbers. Not every firm offers every size, and 3, 5 and 14 yard skips are less common, so ask the firm what it stocks.

How big is each skip?

Rent-a-skip's 2026 size guide gives these approximate sizes. A 2 yard skip is about 6ft by 4ft by 3ft (1.83m by 1.22m by 0.91m). A 4 yard skip is about 6ft by 4ft by 4ft. A 6 yard skip is about 10ft by 5ft by 4ft (3.05m by 1.52m by 1.22m). An 8 yard skip is about 12ft by 6ft by 4ft (3.66m by 1.83m by 1.22m). A 10 yard skip is about 12ft by 6ft by 5ft, and a 12 yard about 12ft by 6ft by 6ft.

Mick George, a large East Midlands operator, publishes its own measurements, taken along the rim. Its 4 yard skip is 2.53m long, 1.63m wide and 0.89m high; its 8 yard is 3.40m by 1.66m by 1.30m; its 12 yard is 4.04m by 1.65m by 1.68m; and its 16 yard is 4.34m by 1.63m by 2.08m.

The two guides differ because skips are made by different manufacturers, so measure the space and give the firm the width of your drive or gate before it books a size.

What fits in each size of skip?

A 2 yard mini skip holds 20 to 30 bin bags or about 18 wheelbarrow loads, which suits a bathroom refit or a one-room clear-out (rent-a-skip, 2026). A 4 yard midi holds 30 to 40 bags or about 36 wheelbarrow loads and suits a kitchen or bathroom refit.

A 6 yard builders skip holds 50 to 60 bags or about 54 wheelbarrow loads, and an 8 yard holds 60 to 80 bags or about 72 wheelbarrow loads. Mick George lists its 8 yard skip for building work and house clearances.

A 10 yard skip holds 80 to 100 bags and a 12 yard 100 to 120 bags (rent-a-skip). Mick George's 16 yard skip holds 140 to 160 bags and is aimed at shop fittings and light construction waste. Larger skips suit light, bulky waste rather than rubble.

How much weight can each skip size take?

Rent-a-skip's 2026 guide gives a weight limit of 2 tonnes for a 2 yard skip, 3.75 tonnes for 4 yards, 6 tonnes for 6 yards and 8 tonnes for 8 yards. Its 10 and 12 yard skips also have an 8 tonne limit, the same as an 8 yard skip, because the lorry, not the skip, sets the ceiling.

Mick George says its 12 and 16 yard skips are not suitable for soil or hardcore. Rent-a-skip gives a ceiling of about 18 tonnes for roll on roll off containers of every size.

Going over the limit costs £50 to £150 extra on rent-a-skip's July 2026 figures, and a firm can refuse to lift a skip that is overloaded. Weight limits vary by firm, so confirm the allowance in writing.

How much space does a skip need?

An 8 yard skip needs a clear area of roughly 3.4m to 3.7m by 1.7m to 1.8m, using the Mick George and rent-a-skip measurements, plus room for the lorry to stand alongside and lift it. Ask about overhead cables, trees and low gates before booking.

A roll on roll off lorry needs more. Rent-a-skip says a hook-loader needs firm, level hardstanding with roughly 3.5m of clear width and 4m of height clearance.

A skip on your own drive needs no permit. A skip on a road or pavement needs a permit from the highway authority, and the skip firm usually applies for it.

Is a bigger skip better value?

For light, bulky waste a bigger skip often is: MyJobQuote's September 2026 range for a 12 yard skip is £220 to £440, against £160 to £370 for an 8 yard. For heavy waste it is not, because rent-a-skip's 10 and 12 yard skips carry the same 8 tonne limit as an 8 yard skip.

For soil, bricks and concrete, a smaller skip or a grab lorry usually costs less than paying overweight charges on a large skip.

Common questions

How many bin bags fit in an 8 yard skip?

About 60 to 80 bin bags, according to both Mick George and rent-a-skip. Rent-a-skip puts it at about 72 wheelbarrow loads.

What size skip do I need for a kitchen refit?

A 4 yard midi skip, holding 30 to 40 bin bags, suits most kitchen or bathroom refits on rent-a-skip's 2026 guide. A larger project with walls coming down may need a 6 or 8 yard builders skip.

Can I fill a skip above the rim?

No. Skips must be filled level with the rim, and rent-a-skip says an overfilled skip is refused at collection. If you could not slide a flat board across the load, it is overfilled.

What is the weight limit of a mini skip?

Rent-a-skip gives 2 tonnes for a 2 yard mini skip. Bricks, soil and tiles reach that quickly, and overweight loads cost £50 to £150 extra (rent-a-skip, July 2026).
