The ranges come from two published 2026 cost guides that disagree, especially at small sizes, so we show both rather than averaging them. They exclude permits and assume mixed light waste. They are operators' and lead-generation sites' figures, not independent surveys, so treat them as a guide and get a written quote with your postcode.
What moves the price
- Region: the same 8 yard skip had a median of £183 around Swansea and £517 around Truro, a 2.8 times gap (rent-a-skip price index, July 2026).
- Disposal: gate fees at the transfer station make up 35 to 55% of the price (rent-a-skip, July 2026), and landfill tax is £130.75 a tonne at the standard rate from 1 April 2026 (GOV.UK).
- Weight: heavy loads of soil, rubble or concrete trigger overweight surcharges of £50 to £150, and some larger skips are not offered for heavy waste at all.
- Placement: a skip on the road needs a council permit, from £12.50 to £260 in June 2026, and many permits last 7 days while the hire lasts 7 to 14.
- Contents: plasterboard mixed into general waste adds £80 to £150, mattresses £15 to £30 each (rent-a-skip FAQ), and upholstered seating cannot go in at all.

Questions about skip hire
How long can I keep a skip?
Standard hire is 7 to 14 days. Rent-a-skip quotes extensions at 50 to 75% of the original fee, or £30 to £80 for another 7 days. A skip on the road also needs its permit extended, and many councils issue permits for 7 days.
What happens if my skip is too heavy?
The firm will charge an overweight surcharge, put at £50 to £150 by rent-a-skip (July 2026), or may refuse to lift it. Heavy waste such as soil and rubble suits a smaller skip or a grab lorry. Landfill tax from 1 April 2026 is £130.75 a tonne at the standard rate and £8.65 a tonne at the lower rate for inert waste such as clean soil and rubble (GOV.UK).
