Skip weight limits and overweight charges explained

An 8 yard skip has a weight limit of about 8 tonnes and a 2 yard mini about 2 tonnes on rent-a-skip's 2026 size guide, and going over costs £50 to £150 extra (rent-a-skip, July 2026). Soil and rubble reach the limit long before a skip is full, so a smaller skip or a grab lorry often costs less.

What is the weight limit for each skip size?

Rent-a-skip's 2026 size guide gives 2 tonnes for a 2 yard skip, 3.75 tonnes for a 4 yard, 6 tonnes for a 6 yard and 8 tonnes for an 8 yard. Its 10 and 12 yard skips also have an 8 tonne limit, the same as the 8 yard, because the lorry sets the ceiling.

Roll on roll off containers carry about 18 tonnes at most, whatever the size (rent-a-skip). Limits vary by firm and lorry, so get the allowance in writing.

Why do soil and rubble cause overweight skips?

Soil, clay, bricks and concrete are much heavier for their volume than household or bulky waste, so they hit the weight limit while the skip still looks half empty.

Mick George says its 12 and 16 yard skips are not suitable for soil or hardcore because of weight restrictions, and that its 20 yard roll on roll off should be filled only three quarters full with inert waste such as concrete.

How are overweight skips charged?

Rent-a-skip lists an overweight charge of £50 to £150 for loading soil or rubble beyond the allowance (July 2026). Some firms weigh the skip at the transfer station and charge by the tonne over the limit.

A firm can also refuse to lift a skip that is too heavy or overfilled, and ask you to take waste out before it will collect. Ask how overweight loads are charged before the skip arrives.

How does landfill tax affect skip prices?

Landfill tax is charged by weight. From 1 April 2026 the standard rate is £130.75 a tonne and the lower rate for inert waste, such as clean soil and rubble, is £8.65 a tonne (GOV.UK). The rates were £126.15 and £4.05 a tonne from 1 April 2025.

The same rates apply in Scotland and Wales. Keeping clean soil and rubble separate from mixed waste means it can be charged at the lower rate, which is why some firms offer cheaper inert-only skips.

Is a smaller skip or a grab lorry better for heavy waste?

A smaller skip reaches its weight limit with less volume, so you are less likely to overload it. A 6 yard skip with a 6 tonne limit costs £230 to £340 on rent-a-skip's 2026 figures.

For large amounts of soil or rubble, a grab lorry is often cheaper. RubbishBids estimated that 12 tonnes of soil would need two 8 yard skips at about £500 plus permits, against about £295 for one 6-wheel grab load carrying 12 to 14 tonnes in London (July 2026).

Common questions

How heavy can an 8 yard skip be?

About 8 tonnes on rent-a-skip's 2026 size guide. Weight limits vary by firm, so ask for the allowance in writing.

What happens if my skip is overweight?

The firm will add an overweight charge, put at £50 to £150 by rent-a-skip (July 2026), or may refuse to lift the skip until some waste is removed.

Can I put soil in a 12 yard skip?

Usually not. Mick George says its 12 yard skip is not suitable for soil or hardcore because of weight restrictions. A smaller skip or a grab lorry suits heavy waste.

Is clean soil cheaper to get rid of than mixed waste?

Yes. Clean inert waste is taxed at £8.65 a tonne at landfill from 1 April 2026, against £130.75 a tonne for other waste (GOV.UK). Keep it separate and tell the firm.
