Skip hire
Large skip hire (10 to 16 yard)
A 12 yard maxi skip costs £370 to £550 for a 7 to 14 day hire on rent-a-skip's 2026 UK figures, and £220 to £440 on MyJobQuote's September 2026 guide. MyJobQuote puts 10 yard skips at £180 to £400 and 16 yard skips at £240 to £500. Large skips are for bulky, light waste: most firms will not take soil or hardcore in them.
What this covers
Typical price. A 12 yard maxi skip costs £370 to £550 for a 7 to 14 day hire on rent-a-skip's 2026 figures, or £220 to £440 on MyJobQuote's September 2026 guide, with 16 yards at £240 to £500 (MyJobQuote).
Typical jobs
- Full house clearance of light, bulky household items, with sofas collected separately
- Shop or office fit-out waste: partitions, packaging and ceiling tiles
- Loft and garage clear-out in one go
- Timber and packaging from a self-build or large extension
- Light demolition waste such as old fitted wardrobes and doors
What is involved
Large or maxi skips run from 10 to 16 cubic yards. Rent-a-skip's 2026 guide gives a 10 yard skip as roughly 12ft by 6ft by 5ft (3.66m by 1.83m by 1.52m), holding 80 to 100 bin bags, and a 12 yard skip as roughly 12ft by 6ft by 6ft, holding 100 to 120 bin bags. All dimensions are approximate.
Mick George lists its 12 yard skip at roughly 4.04m long at the rim, 1.65m wide and 1.68m high, and its 16 yard skip at roughly 4.34m by 1.63m by 2.08m, holding 140 to 160 bin bags. We found no published dimensions for 14 yard skips.
Weight is the main limit. Rent-a-skip gives an 8 tonne limit for both its 10 and 12 yard skips, the same as an 8 yard skip, and Mick George says its 12 yard skip is not suitable for soil or hardcore because of weight restrictions. Fill large skips with light, bulky waste and use a smaller skip or a grab lorry for rubble.

Choosing a firm
Ask whether the size you want is allowed on the road in your area, what weight allowance comes with it, and how overweight loads are charged. Ask whether an enclosed or lockable version is available; rent-a-skip lists lockable skips at £20 to £40 extra per hire.

Common questions
How much is a 12 yard skip?
Rent-a-skip's 2026 figures put a 12 yard skip at £370 to £550 for a 7 to 14 day hire, and its FAQ page gives £370 to £500. MyJobQuote gives £220 to £440 (September 2026). Permits are extra.
Can I put soil or rubble in a 12 yard skip?
Usually not. Mick George says its 12 yard skip is not suitable for soil or hardcore because of weight restrictions. A 6 yard skip or a grab lorry suits heavy waste.

About 140 to 160 bin bags, according to Mick George, whose 16 yard skip measures roughly 4.34m long, 1.63m wide and 2.08m high. Mick George suggests it for shop fittings and light construction waste rather than heavy rubble.
