Sofa removal and disposal

Sofa removal costs £60 to £120 for a 2 or 3 seater in 2026 (Fantastic Services cost guide, October 2026), and Clearabee's published price for a 3 seater sofa is £73 including VAT. Sofas are priced per item because, since 1 January 2023, upholstered seating containing POPs must be kept apart from other waste and incinerated rather than landfilled. That rule also means a sofa cannot go in a skip.

What this covers

What it costs. Prices by size and region, and what moves them, are in the cost guide. Full cost breakdown.

Typical jobs

  • Collecting an old 3 seater sofa on the day a new one is delivered
  • Removing a corner sofa that has to be split into sections to get out of a flat
  • Taking away a sofa bed and its mattress from a spare room
  • Clearing two armchairs and a footstool from a parent's living room
  • Removing a reclining sofa left behind by a tenant

What is involved

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are chemicals, some used in older flame retardants, that break down very slowly. GOV.UK guidance for England says waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs must be incinerated at a facility authorised to accept it, and must not be mixed with other waste during collection, storage or treatment.

The rule covers sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, recliners, upholstered dining chairs, footstools, futons, bean bags, home office chairs and upholstered garden furniture. It does not cover mattresses, curtains, blinds, beds or small scatter cushions.

A carrier can collect a sofa on the same van as other bulky waste, as long as it stays separate and is unloaded separately. That extra handling is why sofa prices are higher than other furniture of a similar size, and why you should be wary of anyone offering to take a sofa for very little.

Councils collect sofas too, and many price them separately from other bulky items. Bristol charges £26.50 for one soft furnishing against £27 for three other items. Across the UK, Business Waste found an average minimum bulky waste charge of £37.70, ranging from £5 to £90.90 (July 2026).

A sofa in good condition with its fire safety label may go to reuse instead: GOV.UK has separate guidance on reusing upholstered seating, and some furniture retailers collect the old sofa when they deliver a new one.

Choosing a firm

Ask where the sofa will go: the answer should be an incineration or energy from waste site, not a general load to landfill. Give the size and type (2 seater, corner, recliner, sofa bed) and say whether it needs to come down stairs or be split into sections.

The rubbish removal page covers the rules.

Common questions

How much does it cost to get rid of a sofa?

A 2 or 3 seater costs £60 to £120 to remove in Fantastic Services' guide (October 2026). Clearabee's published prices are £61 for a 2 seater, £73 for a 3 seater and £89 for a corner sofa, including VAT. RubbishBids quotes £45 to £80 for a 2 seater.

Can I put a sofa in a skip?

No. Since 1 January 2023, upholstered seating containing POPs must be kept apart from other waste and incinerated, so skip firms will not accept sofas in a mixed skip. Book a separate sofa collection.

Why is sofa disposal more expensive than other furniture?

Sofas must be kept separate from other waste and sent for incineration at an authorised site, rather than landfilled or sorted with mixed waste. That extra handling and disposal is priced into each item.

Does the council collect sofas?

Most councils do, through a bulky waste collection. Business Waste found an average minimum council charge of £37.70 in July 2026. Some councils price soft furnishings separately: Bristol charges £26.50 for one soft furnishing.
