Why does sofa removal cost more than other furniture?

Sofa removal costs £60 to £120 for a 2 or 3 seater (Fantastic Services, October 2026) because, since 1 January 2023, upholstered seating containing POPs must be kept separate and incinerated rather than landfilled. The same rule means a sofa cannot go in a skip.

What are POPs and why do they affect sofas?

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are chemicals that break down very slowly and build up in the environment. Some were used in flame retardants in the foam and fabric of older upholstered furniture.

GOV.UK guidance in force since 1 January 2023 says waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs must be incinerated at a facility authorised to accept it, must be kept separate from other waste during collection, storage and transport, and must not be accepted by landfill operators.

Which items count as upholstered seating?

The rules cover sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, recliners, upholstered dining chairs, footstools, bean bags, home office chairs and upholstered garden furniture: any upholstered item that can reasonably be described as household seating.

They do not cover mattresses, curtains, blinds, scatter cushions smaller than 60cm by 60cm, commercial seating or furniture with no upholstery.

How much does sofa removal cost?

Fantastic Services prices a 2 or 3 seater sofa at £60 to £120 (October 2026). Clearabee's published prices, including VAT, are £32 for an armchair, £61 for a 2 seater, £73 for a 3 seater, £89 for a corner sofa and £98 for a sofa bed with mattress.

Added to a mixed rubbish load, RubbishBids lists a surcharge of £20 to £35 for a sofa (October 2026). The extra handling, a separate route and incineration costs are what push the price above other furniture of a similar size.

Is a council bulky waste collection cheaper for a sofa?

Often. Business Waste found an average minimum council bulky waste charge of £37.70 across UK councils, from £5 to £90.90, with 30 councils offering some free collections (survey published 2 July 2026).

Some councils price soft furnishings separately: Bristol charges £26.50 for one soft furnishing against £27 for three other items. Council crews usually collect from the kerbside on a booked date.

Will a furniture shop take my old sofa?

Some retailers offer to collect your old sofa when they deliver a new one, often for a fee. Ask when you order, and check that the collection is by a registered waste carrier.

A sofa in good condition with its fire safety label attached may be accepted by a furniture reuse charity, which keeps it out of the waste stream altogether. GOV.UK publishes separate guidance on reusing upholstered seating.

Why should I be wary of very cheap sofa collections?

Legal sofa disposal has a real cost, because the sofa has to go to an incinerator authorised to take POPs waste. A collector charging far less than the going rate may not be taking it there.

Check the collector's waste carrier registration, ask where the sofa will go, and keep a receipt. In England a householder who hands waste to someone not authorised to take it, without making reasonable checks, can be given a fixed penalty of up to £600 in England (since 31 July 2023).

Common questions

Can I put a sofa in a skip?

No. Since 1 January 2023, upholstered seating containing POPs must be kept separate and incinerated, so skip firms will not accept sofas in a mixed skip.

Are mattresses covered by the POPs rules?

No. GOV.UK lists mattresses, curtains and blinds as outside the upholstered seating rules. Mattresses still usually carry a charge because they are bulky and recycled separately.

How much does it cost to get rid of a corner sofa?

Clearabee's published price for a corner sofa is £89 including VAT, and RubbishBids gives £70 to £120 for a corner sofa or sofa bed.

Does the council collect sofas?

Most councils do, through a bulky waste collection. Business Waste found the average minimum council charge was £37.70 in its July 2026 survey.
