Rubbish removal
Furniture disposal
Furniture disposal costs £30 to £90 per item for a professional collection in 2026, with a sofa usually £60 to £120 (Fantastic Services cost guide, October 2026). Two or three items in one collection cost £70 to £160 outside London, so it pays to clear several at once. Council bulky waste collections are cheaper for some items but collect from the kerbside only.
What this covers
Typical price. Furniture disposal costs £30 to £90 per item for a professional collection, with a sofa usually £60 to £120 (Fantastic Services, October 2026).
Typical jobs
- Collecting a flat-pack wardrobe that will not survive another move
- Taking away a bed frame and mattress after a new bed is delivered
- Removing a dining table and six chairs from a first floor flat with no lift
- Clearing a spare room of a desk, bookcase and chest of drawers
- Collecting garden furniture and a broken sofa from a back garden
What is involved
A furniture disposal crew collects unwanted furniture from inside the property, dismantles it if it will not fit through the door, and takes it for reuse, recycling or disposal. Wood and metal are recycled where possible, and items in good condition may go to reuse.
Fantastic Services prices a chair, bedside table or small unit at £30 to £50, an armchair, chest of drawers or desk at £45 to £80, and a wardrobe, large sofa or bed frame at £70 to £130 (October 2026). A van load of furniture costs £180 to £350 outside London.
Sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seating are handled differently. Since 1 January 2023, GOV.UK guidance says upholstered domestic seating containing POPs must be kept apart from other waste and incinerated rather than landfilled. That covers sofas, armchairs, upholstered dining chairs, footstools, bean bags and home office chairs, so these items are priced individually.
Council bulky waste collections are another option. Business Waste found an average minimum council charge of £37.70, ranging from £5 to £90.90, with 30 councils offering some free collections (July 2026). Furniture in good condition can also go to charity reuse schemes, which usually need upholstered items to carry their fire safety label.
Choosing a firm
List every item when you ask for a quote and say which floor it is on, whether there is a lift, and whether anything needs dismantling. Ask whether upholstered seating is priced separately and whether the price includes dismantling.

Common questions
How much does furniture disposal cost?
Fantastic Services prices furniture disposal at £30 to £90 per item, with a sofa usually £60 to £120 and a wardrobe or bed frame £70 to £130 (October 2026). Two or three items in one collection cost £70 to £160 outside London.
Is the council cheaper for furniture collection?
Often, for a few items. Business Waste found the average council minimum charge for bulky waste was £37.70 in July 2026, ranging from £5 to £90.90. Councils collect from the kerbside on a booked date, while a private crew carries items out of the house.
Why does an armchair cost more to dispose of than a table?
Upholstered seating contains POPs and, since 1 January 2023, must be kept separate and incinerated rather than landfilled. That separate handling is why sofas and armchairs are priced per item.
