Skip or man and van: which costs less?

For a few bags or one room of rubbish, a man and van at £60 to £150 for a small load often costs less than a 2 yard mini skip at £140 to £220 (Fantastic Services, October 2026; rent-a-skip, 2026). For waste produced over a week or more a skip suits better, and for heavy soil or rubble a grab lorry can beat several skips.

When is a skip the better choice?

A skip suits a job that produces waste over several days, such as a kitchen refit, a renovation or a long clear-out. It sits on site for 7 to 14 days and you load it as you go.

An 8 yard builders skip costs £280 to £420 on rent-a-skip's 2026 figures or £160 to £370 on MyJobQuote's September 2026 guide, and holds 60 to 80 bin bags. A permit is extra if it goes on the road, and sofas and other upholstered seating cannot go in.

When is a man and van cheaper?

A man and van suits a one-off load, especially when the waste is inside the house. The crew carries it out and loads it, there is no permit, and you pay for the share of the van your waste fills.

Fantastic Services prices a small load at £60 to £150, a half load at £150 to £250 and a full van load at £250 to £400 or more outside London (October 2026), with London and the South East 20 to 30% higher. Clearabee's published prices are £99.99 for 1 cubic yard and £149.99 for 2 cubic yards, including VAT.

A man and van also takes items a skip cannot, such as sofas and fridges, priced per item.

Is a skip bag cheaper than a skip?

Sometimes. Hippo's bag and collection prices ran from £212.99 for its 1 tonne MIDIBAG to £336.99 for its HIPPOSKIP, including VAT, in October 2026, which overlaps the price of a mini skip. Rent-a-skip's July 2026 guide gives much lower generic figures: £5 to £35 for a bag and £70 to £120 for a collection.

A skip bag needs no permit on your own land and no space for a skip, but the collection lorry's crane has to reach it, and Hippo does not accept sofas, cushions or upholstered items.

What is wait and load, and when does it make sense?

With wait and load, the lorry drops a skip, waits while you fill it, then takes it away. Mick George advertised the service from £99 in October 2026, with 15 minutes of waiting included and £60 an hour after that, charged in 15 minute blocks.

It suits streets where a skip cannot stay and waste that is already bagged and stacked by the kerb. Firms disagree on permits: rent-a-skip says none is needed because nothing stays on the road, while Mick George says one is still needed on public land.

When is a grab lorry better than a skip?

A grab lorry suits loose, heavy waste such as soil, clay, hardcore and rubble. It loads itself with a hydraulic arm and leaves in one visit.

Rent-a-skip put a 6-wheel grab load at £250 to £400 and an 8-wheel at £320 to £500 in July 2026. RubbishBids estimated that 12 tonnes of soil would need two 8 yard skips at about £500 plus permits, against about £295 for one 6-wheel grab load in London (July 2026).

Which option suits sofas, mattresses and fridges?

A rubbish removal firm or a council bulky waste collection, not a skip. Sofas must be kept separate and incinerated under the POPs rules, and most skip firms refuse fridges.

Sofa removal costs £60 to £120 for a 2 or 3 seater (Fantastic Services, October 2026), and a fridge £35 to £75 as a one-off collection (RubbishBids). Business Waste found an average minimum council bulky waste charge of £37.70 in its survey published in July 2026.

Common questions

Is a skip cheaper than a man and van?

For a small load, usually not: a small man and van load costs £60 to £150, against £140 to £220 for a 2 yard mini skip on rent-a-skip's 2026 figures. For a week of renovation waste, a skip usually works out cheaper than several van loads.

Who loads the waste?

You load a skip, a skip bag and a wait and load skip yourself. A man and van crew does the loading, which is why the price covers labour as well as disposal.

Can a man and van take rubble?

Yes, but heavy waste fills a van's payload before its space, so it is priced higher. Fantastic Services prices a small builders waste load of 3 to 4 cubic metres at £100 to £200 (October 2026).

Do I need a permit for a skip bag?

Not when it sits on your own drive or garden. Ask the collection firm before placing one on a pavement or road.
